benicar-bottlesBenicar is a high blood pressure medicine that has recently been linked to numerous intestinal problems that are similar to Celiac disease. If you or someone you love has taken the drug and suffered chronic diarrhea, malnourishment, extreme weight loss, or intestinal damage, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer, Daiichi Sankyo.

History of Benicar Lawsuits

New research has shown that Benicar may cause a gastrointestinal (GI) condition known as sprue-like enteropathy, which causes symptoms that mimic those of Celiac disease. People who have been misdiagnosed with Celiac disease and have experienced the side effects associated with Benicar may be able to file a lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer.

Between 2002 and 2008, Daiichi Sankyo spent roughly $1 billion promoting Benicar, stating that the drug was superior to others of its kind. In recent years, the FDA has stated that no other blood pressure drugs have been linked to severe intestinal issues, with the exception of Benicar. In July 2013, the FDA issued a warning that Benicar may cause sprue-like enterotherapy and encouraged those injured by the drug to look into filing a lawsuit.

Some of the first lawsuits against Daiichi Sankyo were filed in New Jersey in February 2014. The cases were then moved to the federal courts and many more have been filed throughout the United States to date.

Problems Associated with Benicar

According to the FDA, Benicar has been linked to the following symptoms:

  • Severe, chronic diarrhea
  • Substantial weight loss
  • Dehydration
  • Malnutrition
  • Other severe intestinal issues
  • Sprue-like enteropathy issues

Chronic diarrhea is oftentimes linked to Celiac disease, which is an allergy to gluten. Because the symptoms are so similar, many people have been misdiagnosed and treated for Celiac disease when the actual root of the problem was Benicar.
