FDA Warnings on Raptiva

On October 16, 2008 the FDA issued a “black box” warning for Raptiva, the FDA’s sternest warning, about the risk of life-threatening infections. Patients were notified of the risks, but from the time of the warning to April 8, 2009, when Genentech volunteered to stop selling Raptiva, three cases of PML were reported. Because there is no known cure for this infection, most cases are fatal and the few survivors are left severely disabled. There is also no way to know who is at risk for PML, so essentially all patients taking Raptiva are candidates for the infection.
