Paxil is a medication that's prescribed to treat several different psychological disorders. Paxil is an SSRI, which is a class of drugs that are loosely grouped together because of the similar conditions they treat and because of how they tend to work inside the body.

Paxil works by penetrating the brain in order to increase the amount of the neurotransmitter known as serotonin in the synaptic gap between nerve cells. When there is an imbalance in the amount of serotonin that transmits between cells when the body is sending messages inside of itself, this imbalance can lead to the psychological conditions that Paxil and other SSRI's are used to treat.
