Deep Vein Thrombosis Leads to Arm AmputationA local media report indicates that 32-year-old Brandy Armantrout had to have her arm amputated in December 2011, after she developed severe blood clots that she alleges were caused by Yaz, a medication she had taken since 2007. According to Armantrout, she sought medical attention after she experienced tingling in her left arm, which was turning black. Healthcare professionals were unable to find a pulse in her wrist, and her arm was eventually amputated above the elbow as a result of deep vein thrombosis. The cost of a prosthetic replacement for Armantrout's arm was not covered, and the Oklahoma woman is pursuing a lawsuit against Bayer in an effort to seek compensation for the injury she claims was caused by the firm's Yaz oral contraceptive.Potential Side Effects of Yaz, YasminYaz is a newer generation birth control pill manufactured by Bayer Healthcare and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2001. The drug is used to prevent pregnancy in women by making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and by preventing any fertilized eggs from attaching to the uterine lining. Since its introduction more than a decade ago, Yaz has become one of the most commonly used oral contraceptives on the market in the United States. Unfortunately, mounting research has linked Bayer's drospirenone-containing Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills to devastating and potentially life-threatening side effects like deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and death.Yaz, Yasmin Lawsuits Filed Against BayerMore than 12,000 women across the country are pursuing legal action against Bayer after suffering a serious side effect potentially associated with Yaz or Yasmin oral contraceptives. In the federal court system, Yaz and Yasmin litigation has been consolidated before U.S. District Judge David R. Herndon in the Southern District of Illinois, as part of an MDL (multidistrict litigation). The Yaz and Yasmin litigation recently became the largest pending consolidated litigation in the entire U.S., with the total number of claims surpassing even asbestos litigation, which was consolidated in 1991. About half of all lawsuits Bayer is currently facing involve venous clot injuries, while other claims allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn consumers about the risk of major side effects with Yaz use.Contact Our Experienced Attorneys TodayBayer Healthcare has already reached settlement agreements in thousands of Yaz cases involving women who claim suffered deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism after taking the oral contraceptives Yaz or Yasmin.
