The drug Metoclopramide, also known by the brand name Reglan, has recently been reported to be connected to the serious movement disorder tardive dyskinesia.

Reglan is a prescription drug that is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux caused by nausea and gastrointestinal disorders (GERD). Not only is Reglan prescribed to those experiencing heartburn and acid reflux, it is also prescribed to women who are pregnant and experiencing morning sickness, breastfeeding mothers, infants and children for nausea associated with migraines.

Tardive dyskinesia involves involuntary, dyskinetic, repetitive movements. The reason tardive dyskinesia is so dangerous is because it may be irreversible and is related to the drug Metoclopramide.

On January 26, 2009 the FDA issued an alert warning against chronic use of Metoclopramide containing drugs and requiring a boxed warning.

Tardive dyskinesia can result in symptoms that include random movements in the tongue, lips or jaw, facial grimacing, movements of the arms, legs, fingers and toes, and/or swaying movement of the trunk or hip.

According to the FDA, “Recently published analysis suggests that metoclopramide is the most common cause of drug-induced movement disorders.”

There are four forms of Metoclopramide:

  • Reglan Tablets
  • Reglan Oral Disintegrating Tablets
  • Metoclopramide Oral Solution
  • Reglan Injection

If you have experienced any of these side effects you need to consult with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
