The two most problematic drugs in Oklahoma are marijuana and methamphetamine. Currently, possession of marijuana has the highest offense rate in the state. The abuse of drugs directly impacts the youth of Oklahoma, as there is a direct correlation between the drug offenses of juveniles compared to those of adults. Methamphetamine has become a more serious concern as new recipes have made production of this drug easier than ever.  Hopefully young people in Oklahoma will not experiment with these easy-to-obtain drugs, but when bad decisions are made our Oklahoma City criminal defense attorneys are available to represent OK teens if arrested on drug charges.

In 2007, over 700 kilograms of Marijuana were seized; more than all other drugs combined. Marijuana can be found throughout the entire state of Oklahoma, and it is abused more than any other illicit drug. Roughly 8.7 percent of citizens have reported using marijuana in the past year, and sadly the percent of high school students who currently use marijuana is much higher at approximately 16 percent. The most common type is “Mexican Sinsemilla,” which is usually made into a pressed or brick form, with the highest concentration in the urban areas.

It is clear that marijuana is very problematic in high schools. Compared to 9th grade students, 12th graders use marijuana almost twice as much (21.4 percent). By the time students are finished with high school over 45 percent of them have tried marijuana at some point in their life.

The most prevalent offense is possession of marijuana for both juveniles and adults. Selling and manufacturing marijuana offenses make up roughly 10 percent of marijuana-related charges. With over 11 thousand marijuana related arrests, marijuana has resulted in more arrests than any other offense; including non-drug related offenses.

Over the past two years the amount of crystal methamphetamine has increased, making it a principal drug of concern. The use of this drug usually occurs by either injecting or inhaling the substance. The impact of this drug on the body includes a wide variety of symptoms, including paranoia, increased body temperature, and psychosis. These conditions are very dangerous as they can be fatal and facilitate an increase in violence.

The production of methamphetamine occurs both inside and outside of the state. In the late 1980’s, Oklahoma was one of the main sites for methamphetamine production and ranked fourth in the country for laboratories seized. Purchased over the counter, methamphetamine production has reached new record-levels. Approximately 5.5 percent of high school students have used methamphetamine at some point in their life. Furthermore, over 97 percent of people treated for methamphetamine abuse were either Caucasian or American Indian.

Marijuana and Methamphetamine are the two most problematic drugs in Oklahoma. Marijuana in high schools has become very troublesome, and students are using more than the rest of the citizen population. Due to new recipes for creating methamphetamines, production has become easier than ever requiring only items that are sold over the counter to produce. If you have been charged for possession or distribution of methamphetamines, marijuana, or any other drugs you are not neither the first nor the last person in your situation. Please call the Oklahoma drug charges defense attorneys at Atkins and Markoff and make sure your rights are protected. You are not alone in during times of turmoil and experienced lawyers can help you through a troublesome time.
