Some people like to celebrate Independence Day buying fireworks to set off from home. For Russell Terrill of Byers, Oklahoma, it was a decision that cost him his left eye. The Terrill family was known to be very generous, welcoming, and always had plenty of fireworks stocked up for their Fourth of July celebration. Terrill and his son were at their home Sunday night attempting to light a firecracker, when something hit his eye that "felt like a shotgun blast to the face". Rushed to a Pauls Valley hospital, and then eventually to Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City for surgery, the incident was costly, but could have been much worse.
Oklahoma Fireworks Injuries and PrecautionsAccording to a 2008 fireworks annual report, an estimated 7,000 people were treated in the emergency room for a fireworks-related injury. More than half of these were children. Eyes came in second from this report as body parts most likely to be injured, with about 1,000 people suffering eye injuries in 2008. First place went to hands and fingers with 1,400 injuries, and legs in third place with 900 injuries. Most of these were caused more specifically by sparklers and rockets. With injury comes not only much time needed for healing, but also a need for new precautions. In the case of an eye incident, regular check ups are necessary for the potential of diseases such as Sympathetic Opthalmia. New treatments needed for any incidents or precautions needed to be made can add up to be a costly situation. If you or someone you know is currently under treatment for any kind of recent injury, contact the Oklahoma City personal injury lawyers at Atkins and Markoff to make sure you are getting the kind of legal and financial help you need and deserve.
