Defective Drugs
FDA Issues Hold on Study of Avandia Side Effects PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 July 2010 15:42

Avandia is a diabetes drug that's manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, and it's come under intense scrutiny in recent years because of the high number of reports of Avandia side effects that have developed.  Recently, a federal panel of experts narrowly voted to keep the drug on the market for now, but an enormous study known as 'TIDE' has been commissioned that's designed to define the risks involved with using the drug.  While many people have already suffered and have required the help of Avandia side effects lawyers to defend their legal rights, many others are concerned with what could happen in the future after using this medication.

The TIDE Study of Avandia Side Effects

Throughout the course of this Avandia side effects controversy, different studies have been done and reported in regards to this issue, although the FDA has to date summarily dismissed the effectiveness of at least one of them because of alleged bias.  The TIDE study was supposed to help clarify this issue by studying 16,000 diabetics who will use Avandia and compare the results to other drugs and not using medication at all.  To date, 1,100 people have volunteered for the study, but the FDA has placed a hold on additional recruitment for the study because of the dangers related to Avandia side effects.

Why the Avandia Side Effects Study Has Been Halted

The fundamental basis for putting a temporary stop on this Avandia side effects study is directly related to ethics.  Opponents of Avandia in general have stated that there's no reason to continue with a study where the best case scenario is where patients are not harmed by Avandia side effects.  The worst-case involves the development of these Avandia side effects that include an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.  Given the potentially deadly risks, some officials are looking for other options to continue to define the benefits of keeping Avandia on the market and weighing those benefits against the risks.

If you or someone you love has already been harmed by Avandia side effects, you need to take immediate action.  Contact the Avandia side effects lawyers at Atkins & Markoff as soon as possible to schedule a free initial consultation.
