As a result of several incidents of zinc poisoning due to high levels of the element in denture cream, many individuals and families are taking legal action against manufacturers of products such as Fixodent and Poligrip.  Over 30 million Americans wear dentures and regularly purchase denture cream, making this an issue that affects a substantial portion of the population.  If you have expereinced negative side effects from using denture adhesive or denture cream, contact our denture cream poisoning attorneys at Atkins and Markoff today.

Several studies, primarily one produced by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2008, state that the zinc found in many denture creams can not only lead to poisoning, but can result in neurological problems and nerve damage if the issue goes untreated. Many denture wearers, especially the elderly, may interpret the physical weakness, lack of coordination and unexplainable pain of zinc poisoning as the result of aging. However, these signs point to zinc toxicity, which is very dangerous and requires a blood test from a physician to diagnose and subsequently treat.

According to the Associated Press, users of denture creams containing zinc may ingest 45 times the recommended amount of the element, which substantially raises the risk of developing zinc toxicity with regular use. In addition, using products that contain low amounts of zinc in conjunction with denture cream (such as diuretic medications and certain rheumatoid arthritis medications) can also lead to dangerous levels of exposure to the element.

Notable Signs and Symptoms of Zinc Poisoning

Some of the symptoms of zinc toxicity include:

  • Unexplained weakness and/or pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Poor balance/coordination
  • Burning sensation
  • Feeling of wearing gloves or socks when the skin is bare

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and use denture cream, you should see a doctor to determine whether or not your body contains a dangerous amount of zinc.

Even though GlaxoSmithKline stopped using zinc in its Poligrip denture cream after hundreds of lawsuits, many other companies still include it in their product. As a result, many denture wearers are still exposed to high levels of zinc. If you have been a victim of zinc poisoning due to the use of denture cream, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact Atkins and Markoff to speak with a zinc poisoning lawsuit attorney today.
