As a result of the type 2 diabetes medications Januvia and Janumet, many individuals who rely on these medicines to keep their blood sugar in check are being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and other illnesses. According to the FDA, there have been 88 cases of acute pancreatitis associated with the diabetes drugs from 2006 to 2009 and 21 percent of individuals got sick within 30 days of starting the medication. Additionally, 53 percent of the 88 cases were resolved shortly after discontinuing use of Januvia or Janumet.  Unfortunately, some Januvia patients have sustained permanent injuries and should consult our Januvia lawsuit attorneys to explore options in receiving compensation.

Januvia Type 2 Diabetes Medication and Dangerous Side Effects

While the FDA has advised doctors to be more vigilant regarding pancreatitis in patients taking Januvia or Janumet, it is still an illness that can result in death along with several other complications, including low blood calcium, lung collapse and kidney damage. Such an illness may not only take a physical toll, but can affect the emotional well-being of an individual or a family for years, or perhaps the rest of their lives.

Recognizing Pancreatitis Symptoms of Januvia Side Effects

According to a statement from the FDA, early recognition of symptoms can be the key to saving your life, due to "the considerable morbidity and mortality" of acute pancreatitis. Some of the initial symptoms of pancreatitis are:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of appetite
  • Continuous pain in the abdomen, sometimes extending to the back

If untreated, pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic hemorrhaging, necrosis and/or abscess. Additionally, individuals on Januvia and Janumet may also be more susceptible to lactic acidosis (the buildup of lactic acid in the bloodstream faster than it can be removed). However, the majority of the cases have occurred in patients with kidney problems in addition to type 2 diabetes.

Taking Legal Action for Injuries to Diabetics Caused by Januvia

If you have taken either Januvia or Janumet and were a victim of acute pancreatitis as a result, you have the right to fight for compensation. Serious illnesses such as pancreatitis result in hours lost at work, emotional distress for you and your loved ones, and can result in substantial medical bills. However, these problems can be tackled directly with skilled legal representation from Atkins and Markoff. Contact the Januvia side effects lawyers Atkins and Markoff today to schedule a consultation with one of our lawyers.
