The high temperatures and seemingly endless drought have had many effects on Oklahoma. Surprisingly, one of those effects is a reduction in the amount of marijuana being grown in the state. OSBI has noted that the plants are unable to handle the intense heat and lack of rain. In previous years, Oklahoma has ranked in the top five states for its number of marijuana growers. The high temperatures, as well as the drought, have made it very hard to grow the plant within the state of Oklahoma. For this reason, some people have resorted to bringing marijuana in from other locations, otherwise known as drug trafficking.

While the Oklahoma legislature is currently in recess, they are still working on topics for the next session, which begins in February. One issue being studied during this recess is the effect of the 85 Percent Law. The 85 Percent Law was enacted in 1999 and requires individuals convicted of certain felonies to serve at least 85 percent of their sentence before being eligible for release. For eighteen consecutive days, temperatures in Oklahoma have been above 100 degrees, and looking at the extended forecast, there is no relief in sight. The combination of high temperatures and lack of rain has resulted in extremely dry conditions; a typical Oklahoma summer. Most counties west of the I-35 corridor, as well as a few counties in eastern Oklahoma, have instituted a burn ban.
