Child Fatality Statistics Due to Neglect and Abuse Across the Nation PDF Print E-mail

According to a report by the Every Child Matters Education Fund, a Washington-based nonprofit group, Oklahoma has the 7th worst child death rate in the nation. Between 2001-07, 269 children died from neglect and/or abuse. In 2007 alone, 31 children died, giving Oklahoma a death rate of about 3.48 per 100,000 children. Kentucky is ranked as the worst state, with a death rate of 4.09 in 2007.

However, these statistics may not be as terrible as they seem at first glance. Thirty-one children died in Oklahoma due to neglect and abuse in 2007, however, in the same year in Texas, 228 died. Although nearly eight times more children died in Texas, they rank only one spot above us, with a rate of 3.51. In the 2001-07 period, Texas had the most deaths due to neglect and abuse with 1,509.

The report also focuses on other statistics, such as child welfare spending to protect children per capita, dollars spent to address child abuse and neglect per child and per capita, the number of children in poverty, and substantiated cases of child abuse in each state.

One should take caution when taking into account the statistics given in the report because different states use different definitions for abuse and neglect, and Oklahoma’s definition is broader than many states. Placing emphasis on the rankings alone may lead to false conclusions. Instead of focusing upon which state is the worst and which state ranks the best, emphasis should be place on raising awareness about child abuse and how to prevent it not only across the nation, but worldwide. Throughout Oklahoma, there are several dedicated organizations committed to stopping abuse among children and helping those who need it.
