Avandia Side Effects Report's Basic Conclusions

In working towards the completion of this report, Senate staffers reviewed more than 25,000 documents relating to Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, reports of Avandia side effects and the history of this issue within governmental regulatory agencies.  While there were several conclusions drawn based on these documents, the most stunning conclusions follow:

1. Avandia is alleged to be responsible for approximately 83,000 heart attacks in those who had used the drug.
2. GlaxoSmithKline took steps to cover up negative information, discredit negative reports and studies and could have gone so far as intimidating physicians who raised concerns in regards to Avandia side effects.
3. The FDA should have done a better job of noticing and reacting properly to the growing number of reports of serious and dangerous Avandia side effects.

Clearly, these are serious and extremely problematic conclusions to be drawn.  Unfortunately, despite all of the evidence, Avandia remains on the market.
