"Nearly 3 million children nationwide each year are reported abused and neglected," according to the Every Child Matters Education Fund.

NewsOk found that Oklahoma had the seventh worst child death rate from abuse and neglect in the nation during 2007.

Child neglect can be defined in several ways to a number of different people.

"Child Neglect is the failure to provide for the shelter, safety, supervision and nutritional needs of the child, " according to Medical Terms Online, "Child Neglect may be physical, educational, or emotional neglect. "



The state of Oklahoma had thirty-one children die from abuse or neglect in 2007 according to results found from the Every Child Matters Education Fund. The report found Oklahoma with a death rate of 3.48 per 100,000 children.

"The problem [of child neglect] claims the lives of thousands, ruins the lives of millions, and costs taxpayers more than $20 billion annually for child protection and foster care alone,' according to the Every Child Matters Education Fund.

According to to a report by the Every Child Matters Education Fund children in the lowest ranking states are: wice as likely to die in their first year as children in the highest ranking state.

  • Three times more likely to die between the ages of 1-14.
  • Nearly three times more likely to die between the ages or 15-19.
  • Three times more likely to be born to a teenage mother.
  • Five times more likely to be uninsured.
  • Eight times more likely to be incarcerated.
  • Thirteen times more likely to die from abuse and neglect.
  • Less likely to be protected if abused or neglected: the top state spends d12 times more to address child abuse and neglect than the bottom state.
