Meet The Team

  • Jeff Atkins, Partner

    Mr. Atkins is a native Oklahoman, born and raised in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. He received his undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Central Oklahoma where he was also a four-year member of the golf team. He obtained his law degree from The University of Oklahoma College of Law.

    While in law school he received the American Jurisprudence Award for his academic excellence in Conflicts of Laws and Professional Responsibility. Professional affiliations include: Association of Trial Lawyers of American, Oklahoma Bar Association, the William J. Holloway, Jr. American Inn of Court, and the American Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Atkins is admitted to practice in all state and Federal Court Districts in Oklahoma. He has been selected as an Oklahoma Super Lawyer from 2008 – 2013. Mr. Atkins has been married for 15 years and has 2 children.

    In addition to his law practice, he is very active in his community and church. He currently serves on the board of Infant Crisis Services and the Rose Creek Property Owners Association, is entering his sixth season as a coach for his daughter’s soccer team in the Edmond Soccer Club, and co-teaches kindergarten Sunday School with his wife.

  • Daniel Markoff, Partner

    Mr. Markoff was born and raised in Houston, Texas, received his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law. He also studied Comparative Law at Oxford University, and Spanish at the Universidad de Valencia, in Valencia, Spain.

    While in law school, he was the recipient of the Raymond D. Naifeh Judicial Fellowship, and clerked for Oklahoma County District Judge Eugene H. Mathews. Prior to his law career, Mr. Markoff worked on the 1988 Presidential Campaign as National Advance Staff, and as the Immigration Coordinator for the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program.

    Mr. Markoff was one of the first lawyers in Oklahoma to represent women injured by silicone breast implants and the diet drug combination, Fen/Phen. During those cases, and others, Mr. Markoff was interviewed by CNN, The CBS Evening News, Cosmopolitan Magazine and all major TV stations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. He also represented and assisted Lynn Starks, who with the help of State Representative Leonard Sullivan, changed the laws regarding bunk bed construction statewide, nationwide and worldwide.

    Professional Affiliations include The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, Oklahoma City University School of Law, Board of Directors, 1996-1998, Oklahoma City University School of Law Dean’s Circle 2001 – present, Oklahoma County Bar Association. Admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.

  • Barry Davis, Partner

    Barry Davis is the Head of the Estate Planning Center at Atkins & Markoff. Mr. Davis was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, received his undergraduate degree in 1971 from the University of Oklahoma and received his law degree from Oklahoma City University Law School in 1975.

    Mr. Davis has maintained a commercial and insurance trial practice in Oklahoma for over 38 years. He is a certified mediator, trained by the American Arbitration Association, and has mediated and arbitrated over 1,000 cases. Mr. Davis is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Oklahoma County Bar Association, and the Association of Attorney-Mediators. He has served as both Treasurer and Chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law by the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, the United States District Courts for the Western District of Oklahoma, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

    Barry Davis has been recognized for “Rated AV Preeminent for over 12 years as Highest Possible Peer Review Rating in Legal Ability and Ethical Standards” by Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating & Client Review. Mr. Davis has been married for 38 years and has 3 children.

    Besides his work as an attorney, he teaches an adult sunday school class and is an active participant in church choir. Mr. Davis is also involved in a prison ministry called the Oklahoma Messages Project sponsored by Redeeming the Family, an Oklahoma non-profit corporation.

  • Tommy Adler, Partner

    Tommy Adler was born and raised in Oklahoma City and now lives with his family in Norman, OK. He graduated from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City. He received his undergraduate degree in Public Relations and Journalism from the University of Oklahoma. He received his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law with a focus on Constitutional Law.

    During law school, Mr. Adler gained exposure to the practice of criminal defense law as a legal intern with the Oklahoma City criminal defense firm of J.W. Coyle. After graduation, Mr. Adler worked for three years as a Public Defender in Oklahoma County in the felony trial division. He represented clients in thousands of cases ranging from misdemeanors to murders. Mr. Adler left the public sector to begin his career in private criminal defense as the founding attorney of the Atkins and Markoff Law Firm Criminal Division.

    During his career, Mr. Adler has been successful in winning either a dismissal or a not guilty verdict for his clients in over 95% of his cases that have been called for jury trial. Mr. Adler is an alumnus of the Western Trial Advocacy Institute located in Laramie, WY where he studied criminal defense litigation under a host of the nation’s most respected criminal defense trial lawyers.He has also attended post-graduate training at the Absolute Criminal Defense Litigator’s Conference in Las Vegas, NV and has regularly attended the Pat Williams Criminal Defense Institute sponsored by the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association.

    Mr. Adler is married and he and his wife have three beautiful children. Mr. Adler and his wife are long-time members of Journey Church in Norman, OK. Mr. Adler enjoys traveling with his wife, golf, running, and following the OKC Thunder and OU sports with his son. He also enjoys cooking, fishing, and his annual mission trips to Haiti.

  • Mason Johnston, Associate

    Mason is the lead disability attorney at Atkins & Markoff. Although he has handled cases in other areas of law such as personal injury in the past, his practice is devoted exclusively to helping disabled Oklahomans through the disability adjudication process. He has handled hundreds of hearings in front of the Administrative Law Judges assigned to disability hearings throughout Oklahoma. Mason’s experience allows him to effectively and competently represent disabled clients in obtaining their benefits.

    Mason earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and attended law school at Oklahoma City University School of Law. Prior to becoming a licensed attorney in 2013, he was a law clerk at Atkins & Markoff focusing on personal injury cases and pharmaceutical torts. This allowed him to acquire valuable experience in diverse areas of law while still in law school. He is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives, and the Oklahoma Organization of Social Security Claimants.

    Although Mason was born and raised in Mena, Arkansas, he and his wife now call Central Oklahoma their home. They are expecting their first child in May 2015. When he is not spending time with his family and friends, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and training for half-marathons.

  • Dan Good,

    Dan Good is a trial attorney whose sole practice area is criminal defense. Dan served in internship positions with both Atkins and Markoff Law Firm and the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office while in law school at the University of Oklahoma. As a practicing felony trial attorney with the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, Dan has successfully defended clients in a broad range of felony charges in Custer, Woodward, and Okmulgee counties. He then served as a felony trial attorney for the Tulsa County Public Defender’s Office, where he successfully obtained multiple “Not Guilty” verdicts through jury trials. His jury trial work has been recognized by his employers for his effective use of creative and innovative trial tactics and strategies. Dan has also been successful in securing numerous pre-trial dismissals for insufficient evidence and constitutional challenges to police work, which led to evidence suppression. Dan has represented thousands of clients in his career and handles all types of criminal charges. He takes great pride in the work he does for his clients and his extensive criminal defense experience throughout the State of Oklahoma.

    Dan earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, with distinction, in Letters from the University of Oklahoma. He earned his Juris Doctor degree with distinction from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. In post-graduate training and education, Dan is a graduate from the National Defender Training Project’s Trial School, a rigorous program where attendees receive felony jury trial mentorship from some of the best practitioners in the country.

    In his free time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, playing Frisbee with his dogs, and fitness and strength training.

  • Veronica Zan,
    Of Counsel

    Veronica Zan was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ms. Zan earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana University where she majored in Political Science and minored in both Spanish and Criminal Justice. She moved to Oklahoma City in 2010 and enrolled in Oklahoma City University School of Law, where she competed on the American Bar Association National Appellate Moot Court Team, was a member of Oklahoma City University’s Law Review, was inducted to the Order of Barristers, received the Academic Achievement Award from Phi Alpha Delta, Vaught Chapter, and also received CALI Awards for Secured Transactions and Legal Research and Writing II before graduating Cum Laude in 2013.

    During the summer following her first year in law school, Veronica also took an opportunity to study International Law abroad in both The Netherlands and Switzerland. Thereafter, she became a Licensed Legal Intern for a small family law firm in Oklahoma City up until the bar exam. After passing the bar exam, Ms. Zan was employed at a small general practice firm for six months before relocating to another small family law firm. Ms. Zan specializes in all areas of family law, including custody, paternity, division of assets, child support, and juvenile matters.

    When she is not working to find equitable solutions to her clients’ needs, Ms. Zan enjoys avidly supporting the Indianapolis Colts and, of course, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

  • Melanee Kistler, Of Counsel

    Melanee McAfee Kistler was born and raised in Tulsa Oklahoma, where she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Tulsa, majoring in Advertising/Public Relations.

    She worked at Gilcrease Museum for four years as Association Secretary, taking minutes for a 40-member board of directors as well as organizing museum functions and art sales.

    After becoming engaged to her husband, she moved to Oklahoma City to work for the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center as Editorial Assistant for museum publications. She also helped organize events for the prestigious Western Heritage Awards, presenting awards with guest celebrities.

    She embarked on a career change when her daughters were still in grade school and began attending OCU law school. She became a Certified Mediator through the Oklahoma Supreme Court Early Settlement Mediation Program, mediating small claims cases upon referral from district court judges.

    After law school, she worked on the Fen Phen litigation with Phillips, Murrah during the discovery phase of the complex litigation for the opt-out lawsuits.

    She later spent six years working for Oklahoma Child Support Services, managing an interstate caseload and taking remedies to enforce court orders. Another part of her job involved locating assets and employment information for the establishment of paternity and support orders.

    In 2012 she opened her own law firm, focusing her practice on family law and social security disability claims. She recently became the contract attorney for Atkins and Markoff, representing claimants in social security hearings before Administrative Law Judges throughout the state.

    Her professional associations include membership in the Family Law and Juvenile Law sections of the Oklahoma Bar Association, and the Women in Law Committee where she participates in community service projects. She is also admitted to the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.

    She and her husband, Steve, have been married for 27 years and have two marvelous daughters. Lindsay, 25, is in her second year at OU Law School and Hillary, 23, is in the Speech Pathology program at UCO.

  • Bria Hanlon, Associate

    Ms. Hanlon received her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma, then went on to earn her Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University School of Law. While in law school, Ms. Hanlon was the recipient of the merit scholarship and served as a law ambassador for incoming first year students. Ms. Hanlon began clerking for Atkins & Markoff during her second year of law school. She then joined the firm as an associate upon graduation and admission to the bar. Her current practice is focused on pharmaceutical torts and personal injury.

    Ms. Hanlon grew up in Moore, Oklahoma and enjoys spending time with friends and family, checking out the local dining scene, and serving the community. She is a member of the Junior League of Oklahoma City and volunteers weekly at the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma City.
